A routine maintenance check at a Mobile, Alabama dam uncovered a grenade-type improvised explosive device submerged underwater, threatening the city’s drinking water supply. The discovery has raised urgent questions about the security of critical infrastructure nationwide and whether similar devices may be planted at other vulnerable sites.
Multi-Agency Response Eliminates Threat
On May 12, divers conducting standard inspections at the Converse Reservoir Dam discovered the submerged IED. The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System immediately contacted the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, triggering a coordinated response. The Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Response and Render-Safe Team, FBI Bomb Squad, Mobile Police Department Explosive Ordinance Detail, ALEA Bomb Squad, and Daphne Search and Rescue Team worked together to retrieve and safely detonate the device. No injuries occurred during the operation.
Unprecedented Security Breach
MAWSS Director Bud McCrory called the incident an unprecedented threat to public safety. The explosive device sat undetected at the bottom of a dam that supplies drinking water to an entire metropolitan area. McCrory praised the professionalism of law enforcement partners and the quick thinking of contractors who identified the device before it could cause catastrophic damage. The Department of Homeland Security has been notified, though neither DHS nor the FBI has issued public statements about the investigation.
National Security Implications
Authorities have identified no suspects or motive for placing the device. The incident raises serious concerns about the vulnerability of dams, bridges, and water systems across America. Security experts are calling for comprehensive inspections of critical infrastructure nationwide. The grenade-type IED could have caused significant structural damage to the dam and contaminated the water supply serving thousands of residents. Law enforcement agencies are investigating whether this represents an isolated incident or part of a broader threat to American infrastructure.

Just one more item that is being tested on a small scale to see how easy it would be to take out a cities water supply. Just stop & think about all the bridges, big & small you cross every day. There could be any number of those exploded & shut down a city or even a state. Just let your mind wonder & think a little bit. No problem to get explosives, they can be shipped into this country by boat or if someone was smart enough by plane. Just think about it.
