A decorated NYPD sergeant faces up to nine years in prison for stopping a fleeing gang member during a drug bust, while New York hockey fans launch a grassroots movement to overturn what supporters call a political prosecution.
Officer Imprisoned for Split-Second Decision
Sgt. Erik Duran, a highly decorated NYPD officer and father of three, sits in custody after Bronx Judge Guy Mitchell sentenced him to three to nine years for second-degree manslaughter on April 9, 2026. The conviction stems from an August 2023 incident during a routine narcotics buy-and-bust operation in the Bronx. When suspect Eric Duprey, identified as a Trinitarios gang member, fled the scene on a motorcycle speeding down a sidewalk toward officers and civilians, Duran grabbed a cooler from a nearby family’s table and threw it, knocking Duprey off the motorcycle. Duprey sustained fatal injuries from the fall.
Community Rallies Behind Convicted Sergeant
The outpouring of support reached fever pitch at UBS Arena on Long Island during the April 14 Islanders game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Fans responded enthusiastically to a jumbotron display featuring a QR code for donations to Duran’s legal defense fund. The arena’s 50/50 raffle dedicated its proceeds to the cause, generating nearly $45,000 in a single evening. The Sergeants Benevolent Association and National Police Defense Foundation coordinated the fundraising effort, which had already accumulated over $40,000 by Tuesday morning before puck drop. This grassroots movement reflects widespread frustration among law enforcement supporters who view the prosecution as politically motivated overreach.
@POTUS this is ridicules; these Far-Left Rogue judges must be removed.

Prosecution Follows Pattern of Anti-Police Agenda
New York Attorney General Letitia James prosecuted Duran for manslaughter beginning in January 2024, following months of scrutiny after the incident. The case proceeded to a bench trial, where Judge Mitchell convicted Duran in February 2026 before imposing the prison sentence. The National Police Defense Foundation characterized the prosecution as a “blatant miscarriage of justice,” arguing Duran’s actions saved lives by preventing a dangerous gang member from potentially injuring or killing officers, bystanders, and a prisoner already in custody. This case continues a troubling pattern in Democratic-controlled New York, where AG James has built a reputation for aggressive prosecution of law enforcement officers.
Split-Second Choices Under Attack
The circumstances surrounding Duran’s decision underscore the impossible position facing officers during high-stress operations. Duprey, riding unhelmeted on a sidewalk at high speed toward law enforcement and civilians, presented an immediate threat during an active arrest situation. Duran’s improvised response using an available object represents the type of quick thinking officers must employ to neutralize dangers without resorting to lethal force. Yet instead of recognition for protecting public safety, the veteran sergeant received a felony conviction and prison time. This prosecution sends a chilling message to officers nationwide about the personal risk of making split-second decisions to protect others from violent suspects.
Legal Defense Fund Supports Appeal Effort
The rapidly growing legal defense fund aims to secure Duran’s release on bail while his legal team pursues an appeal of the conviction and sentence. Joseph Occhipinti, Executive Director of the National Police Defense Foundation, emphasized that Duran acted without intent to kill but with justified concern for protecting lives endangered by Duprey’s reckless flight. The fundraising model employed at the Islanders game demonstrates innovative community organizing by police unions and support organizations. As of April 15, Duran remains in custody with no bail granted, awaiting the next steps in his appeal process while his family endures his absence and the financial burden of mounting a vigorous legal defense against state prosecution.
