The wife of Spain’s socialist prime minister has been formally charged with corruption and had her passport revoked — meaning she cannot leave the country while she awaits trial.
Story Snapshot
- A Madrid judge charged Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, with four crimes: influence peddling, business corruption, embezzlement, and misappropriation of funds.
- Prosecutors say she used her status as the prime minister’s wife to land a university job she was not qualified for, then diverted public resources for private gain.
- A judge revoked her passport and banned her from leaving Spain while the court decides whether to send the case to trial.
- Sánchez calls the case politically motivated, but his defense rests on denials rather than hard evidence rebutting the specific charges.
Four Charges After a Two-Year Investigation
On April 14, 2026, Madrid Judge Juan Carlos Peinado wrapped up a two-year investigation and formally charged Begoña Gómez on four counts. The charges are influence peddling, business corruption, embezzlement, and misappropriation of funds. The judge gave all parties five days to respond before deciding whether the case moves to a full trial. Gómez denies every allegation.
The case centers on Gómez’s role at the Complutense University of Madrid, one of Spain’s most respected institutions. Prosecutors say she used her position as the prime minister’s wife to obtain a post running a master’s program — despite lacking the formal qualifications for the job. The judge cited her lack of relevant credentials as part of the evidence against her.
Software Scheme and Diverted Public Resources
Prosecutors claim Gómez went further than just landing an unqualified appointment. They say she used university resources to build a software database — a tool meant for the academic program — and then tried to take personal control of it. When the Complutense University of Madrid moved to claim ownership of the software, Gómez and a co-accused advisor allegedly blocked the process and pursued a private commercial path instead.
The judge found enough evidence to accuse Gómez of setting up a structure to control the software’s ownership, future sale, and related intellectual property rights. Two other people, Cristina Álvarez and a businessman named Barrabés, are also charged and deny any wrongdoing. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has also been involved over questions about European Union funds tied to the program.
Passport Revoked, Travel Banned
Beyond the criminal charges, the court revoked Gómez’s passport and banned her from leaving Spain. The move is a standard precautionary measure in serious corruption cases, but it carries real political weight. When the charges were filed, Gómez and Sánchez were on an official trip to China — making the case an international headline at the worst possible moment for the prime minister.
Sánchez has publicly called the investigation a right-wing attack meant to destabilize his coalition government. That framing is a political argument, not a factual rebuttal. His team has offered denials but no document-level evidence — no audits, no financial records, no contracts — that directly disproves the embezzlement or software-diversion claims. Spain has a well-documented history of elite corruption across party lines, and courts there have repeatedly found that proximity to power was used for personal gain. A sitting prime minister calling a judge politically biased does not make the charges disappear — it just makes the politics louder.
