11,000 Officers Rally Behind CONVICTED NYPD Sergeant…

GOP gubernatorial candidate vows to pardon NYPD hero Erik Duran, standing against radical prosecutors punishing cops who fight crime.

Incident Details: Cooler Toss in Bronx Narcotics Operation

On August 23, 2023, NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran, 38, from Putnam County, acted during a narcotics enforcement in Bronx’s Melrose section. Fleeing suspect Eric Duprey, 30, sped toward officers on a motorized scooter. Duran threw a picnic cooler full of drinks at Duprey, causing a crash that led to his death. Duran, with the Narcotics Borough Bronx Tactical Response Unit, maintained he protected colleagues from imminent danger. This marked the first such NYPD conviction in a decade.

Conviction and Sentencing Under James’s Prosecution

In February 2026, Bronx Supreme Court Judge Guy Mitchell convicted Duran of second-degree manslaughter after a bench trial. On April 9, 2026, Mitchell sentenced him to three to nine years, despite discretion for no prison time up to 15 years. The judge rejected Duran’s defense, claiming frustration over the escape drove the act, and stated the term would deter officers. NY AG Letitia James’s office prosecuted, seeking the exact sentence imposed. Duran was fired post-verdict.

Overwhelming Police Support and Pardon Pledge

At least 11,000 officers signed a petition opposing incarceration, highlighting union solidarity for Duran as overzealous prosecution victim. Community activists pushed for 15 years, prioritizing accountability over enforcement realities in drug-plagued areas. On April 13, 2026, a GOP gubernatorial candidate pledged to pardon Duran if elected, energizing law enforcement voters frustrated with policies handcuffing police. This counters James’s aggressive stance, appealing to those valuing officer safety.

The pledge underscores tensions in New York’s gubernatorial race, where backing blue contrasts reform demands. Duran’s appeal is underway, but a pardon would reverse the sentence, validating police actions in split-second scenarios. Bronx communities face ongoing drug crises, where operations like this target threats. Supporters argue such convictions demoralize forces already strained by crime surges and bail reforms.

Broader Fight for Law and Order

Duran’s case reflects national debates on police accountability amid rising urban crime. With Trump’s second term advancing pro-law enforcement policies federally, state-level pushes like this pardon vow resist local anti-cop momentum. It rallies conservatives against what they see as radical DAs undermining public safety. Outcomes could shift New York toward prioritizing officer protection, emboldening prosecutions’ deterrence less effectively.

New York voters weigh police support against reform in upcoming elections. A successful pardon would signal GOP commitment to backing those shielding communities from drugs and violence, aligning with traditional values of strong law enforcement.

  1. Good Job Officers. I am old enough to remember when an NYC Police Officer being commended for shooting a fleeing criminal.
I remember one officer on walking patrol. Then I remember Two officers on walking patrol, then it was Three officers on walking patrol.
I don’t recall if it was ever Four Officers because I moved.

  2. He deserves a commendation not a conviction. NY is in the hands of radical left and worse in NYC! Leticia James is a total disgrace to the U.S: Justice system as are the radical activist Judges doing her bidding .
