A petition drive seeking Alberta’s separation from Canada delivered over 300,000 signatures to provincial election officials Monday, representing roughly 17 percent of voters from the last provincial election and forcing serious consideration of an independence referendum.
Massive Petition Delivered to Election Officials
Mitch Sylvester announced the formal submission of 301,620 signatures outside Elections Alberta’s office in Edmonton on May 4th. Hundreds of supporters gathered for the delivery, marking a significant milestone for the movement. The signatures were collected during Alberta’s harshest winter months, demonstrating sustained grassroots support. Organizers now seek to trigger an October referendum that would allow voters to decide whether the oil-rich province should pursue separation from Canada.
Alberta cannot simply vote one day and walk out of Canada, because secession would require negotiations, a clear referendum result, and major constitutional agreement from the rest
What Happens If Referendum Passes
Should the referendum occur and voters approve independence, Alberta would enter negotiations with Canada’s federal government. The path forward faces substantial legal obstacles. Indigenous groups within the province would likely challenge any separation attempt through the courts, potentially delaying or blocking the process. The province holds significant leverage as one of Canada’s major energy producers, controlling substantial oil reserves that have long fueled economic tensions with Ottawa. These resources could become central bargaining chips during any negotiation process with federal authorities.
Growing Movement Defies Mainstream Dismissal
The 17 percent threshold challenges characterizations of Alberta independence as a fringe movement. Collecting over 300,000 signatures during winter months required extensive organization and volunteer networks across the province. Some Alberta separatists have expressed interest in joining the United States rather than forming an independent nation, though this remains a secondary discussion. The petition’s success puts pressure on Alberta’s premier to address growing frustration with federal policies, particularly regarding energy development and provincial autonomy. Whether provincial leadership will honor the petition and call a referendum remains uncertain, but the signature count demonstrates undeniable momentum behind reconsidering Alberta’s place within Canada.

Wishing you all the best!! We are trying to stop the same garbage below you. Hopefully we can bring North America back to a sense of decency any intelligence!!
Almost every Canadian Province west of the Great Lakes area of the U.S. and Canada should be considering leaving Canada because they all are far larger in land mass than the seat of government in Ottawa. Ottawa is much like D.C. in the U.S. where the liberals hold the power over the entire population. Ottawa provides nothing of real value to the country. Just remember what happened during the “truckers protest” where Ottawa showed it’s true colors and political ideology.
The NDP along with the other two liberal progressive Canadian political party’s need a good wake up call. The population and liberals from the Great Lakes east control how the country is run and its running them into the ground. Mark Carney is leading by his anti Trump & US rehortic which has driven prices up , access to US markets down , unemployment and a dangerous partnership with China on importing Chinese made cars while auto plants in Windsor, Oakville, Brampton and Oshawa lay idle . There dollar continues to plummet against the US and EU dollar as well. The country is a political time bomb ready to implode
