Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson faces 30 felony charges after a special grand jury indicted her in connection with last year’s jailbreak that allowed 10 dangerous inmates to escape from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility. The shocking arrest includes charges of malfeasance in office, obstruction of justice, and maintaining false public records.
Ten Inmates Escape Through Hidden Hole
Last May, 10 inmates broke free from the Orleans Justice Center by maneuvering through a small hole hidden behind a toilet. The escapees included Antoine Massey, Lenton Venburen, Leo Tate, Kendell Myles, Derrick Groves, Jermaine Donald, Corey Boyd, Gary Price, Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis, and Keith Lewis. Investigators discovered bolts had been removed from the outside of the jail wall, prompting scrutiny into who accessed the area before the breach occurred.
Surveillance footage captured the inmates forcing open a door before fleeing into the night. Law enforcement launched an intensive manhunt and eventually recaptured all 10 escapees. Authorities charged 13 individuals with aiding the escape, both inside the facility and while the inmates remained at large.
Sheriff and CFO Face Multiple Charges
Bianka Brown, the chief financial officer for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, was also indicted on 20 felony counts. The charges mirror those against Hutson, including malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice. The Louisiana Attorney General’s office announced the indictments Wednesday, nearly one year after the jailbreak exposed serious security failures at the correctional facility.
Questions About Accountability
The case raises concerns about oversight and management at the Orleans Justice Center. The removal of external bolts suggests potential inside assistance, while the indictments of top officials point to possible systemic failures in jail administration. All escaped inmates were considered dangerous, with several facing murder charges before their escape attempt. The arrests of Hutson and Brown mark a significant development in holding leadership accountable for security breakdowns that endangered public safety in New Orleans.
